What is a pharmacy technician?
Pharmacy Technicians work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist assisting with tasks that do not require professional judgement. Pharmacy technicians are a cornerstone of a pharmacy’s clinical and operational roles.
Pharmacy technicians work in a wide variety of locations. Examples include retail pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, home infusion centers, and nuclear pharmacies. Participants in the Duke University Health System program will gain insights into many of these settings and gain exposure to a world-class academic medical center and facilities.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018) is projected to grow 12 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than average for all occupations. Increased demands for prescription medication and advancing roles in the health-systems are contributing factors.
The median annual wage for pharmacy technicians was $40,300 in 2023.
