Program Overview

The Duke University Hospital (DUH) Pharmacy Leadership Internship Program is an 8-12-week summer program specifically designed for pharmacy students with an interest in gaining exposure to Health-System Pharmacy Leadership with a focus in Clinical Leadership. The intern selected will be exposed to inpatient and ambulatory clinical experiences working alongside the Clinical and Patient Care Services (CPCS) Leadership team.

The goal of this program is to provide student interns with comprehensive experiences that foster personal and professional growth. This will be achieved through exposure to health care leaders, health-system structures, policies, and procedures. Interns will engage in meaningful departmental projects focused on process improvement, revenue generation, quality or safety enhancements, and financial and business planning. The program also offers professional development through mentorship with the CPCS Leadership team and opportunities to integrate into the Transitions of Care team.

Program Objectives

The objectives of the Duke Pharmacy Leadership Internship Program are to:

  1. Provide student intern experiences to foster growth personally and professionally by exposure to health care leaders
  2. Expose the intern to health-system structures, policies and procedures
  3. Provide the intern with professional growth opportunities by working on projects meaningful to the department that may involve process improvement, revenue generation, quality or safety improvements or other financial and business planning
  4. Professional development through mentorship with the CPCS Leadership team 
  5. Provide the student intern the opportunity to integrate into the Transitions of Care team

Participation in the Internship Program

  • Interns must currently be enrolled in an ACPE accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program in a College of Pharmacy.
  • Students must have completed the 1st year of professional pharmacy education by the start of the internship program. Preferred applicants are in their first year or second year of a Doctor of Pharmacy program.
  • This internship is expected to be a full-time internship experience. The internship is expected to be primarily dayshift; Monday-Friday. Student interns typically work 40 hours a week for 8-12 consecutive weeks.
  • The latest start date is June 9, 2025.
  • This internship is compensated based on an hourly rate calculation.
  • Housing is not provided. Parking is not included but is available for student interns to pay for during the internship should they choose.
