Introduction

The critical care residency is a specialized program consisting of 12 calendar month rotations in various critical care settings. The program is designed to include several core experiences necessary for the establishing a foundation of critical care knowledge. As core experiences are completed, the program allows for flexibility in designing a year long experience that will allow the resident to develop into an exceptional critical care pharmacy clinician. Upon completion of this program, the resident will be prepared for a variety of career opportunities including critical care clinical practice and fellowship programs.

Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

The purpose of the Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program is to prepare the resident to excel in the care of critically ill patients in any setting. Excellence will be achieved by:

• Demonstrating accountability for patient care
• Modeling excellence in critical care pharmaceutical care
• Serving as professional role models for pharmacy students and PGY1 residents
• Participating in clinical research and performance improvement projects focused on critical care pharmacotherapy
• Facilitating and leading critical care pharmacotherapy discussions in Critical Care / Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Conference

Required Outcomes

• Demonstrate leadership and practice management skills
• Optimize the outcomes of critically ill patients by providing evidence-based medication therapy as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrate excellence in the provision of training, including preceptorship, or educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training.
• Demonstrate the skills necessary to conduct a critical care pharmacy research project.
• Participate in the management of medical emergencies;

Elective Outcomes

• Perform quality improvement activities ained at enhancing the safety and effectiveness of medication-use processes in the critical care area.
• Provide formalized critical care medication-related information.
